Invitation to a meeting with Nafy Diop, Coordinator for the UNFPA/UNICEF programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting on Wednesday 12 November, 15.30-17.00 at Copenhagen University, Øster Farimagsgade 5, Room 16.1.62. The meeting is organized by the SRHR working group and UNFPA.
Nafy Diop is the Coordinator for the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C): Accelerating Change. Nafy will report on progress and remaining challenges. She will present her research based approach to the issue, identifying data gaps and research priorities, methods etc. She will also comment on the SRHR Working Group Background Paper (Chapter 4.7)
Nafy is in Denmark in connnection with an international conference on FGM/C 11 November at Christiansborg, but this informal meeting is an opportunity to discuss in more detail, especially the more technical and research oriented issues.

CV: Nafissatou J. Diop is the coordinator of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on female genital mutilation/cutting, the world largest programme promoting the abandonment of FGM/C within a generation. Before joining UNFPA, Ms. Diop conducted operation research to test and evaluate programs addressing Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, as the Conversion of Excisors in Mali, the Effectiveness of Using Health Providers in the FGM/C campaign, the Tostan holistic programme in Senegal and its replication in Burkina Faso and the impact of the law in Burkina Faso.
In 2006-07 she led the qualitative study of the Long-term Evaluation of the Tostan Programme in Senegal which provided important evidence for the validity of the holistic social change approach being supported by the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on FGM/C. Beyond the issue of FGM/C, Ms. Diop has directed and managed initiatives to improve community access to quality reproductive health and HIV/AIDS services in West Africa.
Ms. Diop has a Ph.D in demography from the University of Montreal, a Master in socioeconomics of development, and a master’s in sociology from the University of Nanterre, Paris, France.
